The City
Amsterdam | The Netherlands
In order to reduce stag weekends and visitors to the red-light district and reclaim the city for locals, Amsterdam is seeking to raise taxes on tourists by as much as €10 per night. The city of 850,000 people saw about 17 million visitors in 2019, up from 12 million five years earlier, and the trend is anticipated to pick up speed. According to the local council, more than a quarter of visitors remained in cheap hotels, which contributed to a pattern where tourist lodging predominates in the city center while only contributing a little amount of money to municipal coffers.
Naturally, a brief Internet search showed that there are several things to do in and around this incredibly well-known European location. But, we only had a couple of days to see as much as we could in Amsterdam while also trying to keep our trip on a tight budget. We were able to keep within our budget and explore more than we had anticipated thanks to the I Amsterdam City Card. We are pleased to report that, despite the fact that this schedule required some museum hopping and even a day trip to the nearby countryside, we were still able to spend some time in the city. Amsterdam has a lot to offer, and it deserves a lot more of our time. But we think we've spent enough time exploring its different neighbourhoods and getting to know its kind residents to state with certainty that it's one of our favourite locations.
